Sing Out, Shout Out | Bargaining Update 8

Oct 21, 2023

Sing Out, Shout Out
for #APeoplesCUNY
Saturday, December 2, 1–3 PM

Tell Us You’ll Be There

Make plans now to attend the biggest CUNY-wide contract campaign action of the Fall: Sing Out, Shout Out for #APeoplesCUNY, a resounding call for a better CUNY. Our great public university has been underfunded for too long, and tuition hikes, budget cuts, and uncompetitive pay have been the results. Bring family and friends – everybody who loves somebody at CUNY – and come Sing Out for increased CUNY funding at the Governor’s Midtown office and Shout Out for a strong union contract at CUNY Central. Meet at Governor Hochul’s NYC office, 633 3rd Ave, and be ready to sing, chant and march a few blocks to CUNY.

Open call for Musicians
PSC member musicians, vocalists, and performers who would consider donating their talents to the event should contact Ava Farkas at [email protected].

PSC Members Testify at CUNY Hearing Despite Trustees’ Last-Minute Shift to Online

The CUNY community got a late Friday surprise last week when the Board of Trustees decided at the last minute to make its latest public hearing an entirely online event. The fully online “hearing” held Monday, 10/16 had no online broadcast, no way for the public to hear testimony. It was a sham.

More than 70 PSC members had planned to testify in-person or turnout in support of our union’s demands for fair contract and increased funding for CUNY colleges. The change was announced without explanation, in violation of the state Open Meetings Law.

PSC members rallied, despite the shift online. Dozens gathered in the new Union Hall to deliver their testimony as part of a collective, while others who couldn’t change plans logged on to testify from home.

Bargaining Update #8

The October 5 bargaining session was held at CUNY Central with thirty PSC member-observers present. The union continued to argue that current CUNY salaries fail to recognize the value of our work and the expense of living and working in the city, despite the protestations from CUNY management. Management shared preliminary reactions to the PSC’s proposal on multi-year appointments for long-serving teaching adjuncts. The PSC also proposed modifications to the contract to better protect members’ health and safety. Click here to read the full update.
