Bargaining Update 7 | Sick Leave Bank

Sep 22, 2023

Catastrophic Sick Leave Bank
Open Enrollment Period: Oct. 1-31

This is a PSC-CUNY contractual program. It is different from the similarly named Catastrophe Major Medical supplemental insurance offered by NYSUT Member Benefits.

CUNY’s Catastrophic Sick Leave Bank is a pool of voluntarily donated sick leave and annual leave available for potential use as sick leave by all annual full-time employees at CUNY (instructional and classified) who are also donors to the bank. The Catastrophic Sick Leave Bank, which arose out of a PSC contract campaign, exemplifies worker solidarity and mutual support. It gives CUNY workers a way to offer aid to colleagues dealing with a catastrophic illness and provides a place to turn for help if they face a similar need. The open enrollment period for the Catastrophic Sick Leave Bank will be held from October 1 to October 31. Workers must donate leave in a program year to be eligible to receive leave in that year (up to 90 days). Click here for program requirements and to learn how to donate and receive leave from the bank.

The PSC presented two sets of demands to management on Wednesday, September 20, with the help of several member presenters and in the presence of fifty other member observers. The first concerned remote and flexible work: the union is demanding that non-teaching instructional staff and library faculty have the right to work remotely at least 40% of the time. The second concerned multi-year appointments for adjuncts: the union is calling for the pilot agreement to be made permanent and demanding a shorter time to qualify, expanded routes to qualification, and the establishment of a Certificate of Continuous Employment. We also put forward demands for a formal path toward full-time employment and a college-wide rehire list. Management made no new demands, but shared data about salaries and faculty and staff turnover rates at CUNY. The union challenged management’s attempt to compare our NYC-Metro area salaries with average salaries across the whole Northeastern United States. Read the full update.

Anti-Bullying Added to Required CUNY Training

CUNY’s Workplace Violence Prevention Training (WVP) has a new section on preventing bullying thanks to the good work of the PSC’s anti-bullying committee and to our union’s continuing efforts to address workplace bullying through organizing and education, and in labor-management meetings.

Active employees are automatically registered for the training in Blackboard. Part-time employees, including adjuncts, have until the end of the semester to complete this and other required trainings. Full-time employees have until May 31. (Learn more.)
