Much at Stake at Nov. 21 Board Hearing

CUNY’s annual budget request, including funds for adjunct health insurance, proposed tuition hikes, a major revision of the University Bylaws and other items are all on the Calendar for the November 28th CUNY Board of Trustees meeting. The Board will hear testimony on issues relating to upcoming calendar items at a hearing scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM on Monday, November 21st in room 14-220 of the Baruch Vertical Campus (55 Lexington Ave.). To testify, you must sign up with the Board Secretary at (212) 794-5450 by Friday, November 18 at 4:30 PM.

The Union has already won some changes to the proposed Bylaw amendments, but the Union is still pressing CUNY to change elements that could damage the rights of faculty and staff. President Bowen’s testimony will address the PSC’s concerns about the Bylaws, as well as the other issues before the Board.

We Are the 99% Unity Rally—November 17

A broad coalition of labor and community groups, including the PSC, is working with Occupy Wall Street to organize a mass action at Foley Square and throughout Lower Manhattan on Thursday, November 17th. Please come rally and march for our students at CUNY. They truly are the 99%. New York should be funding their education, not handing tax breaks to the wealthy and the super-rich. See the PSC resolution of support for Occupy Wall Street.

To stay informed about the We Are the 99% Unity Rally and learn about feeder events happening earlier in the day throughout the boroughs, check the PSC website and RSVP for the Facebook event.

Be A PSC Health and Safety Watchdog

The first PSC Health and Safety Watchdog meeting of the semester will take place next Monday, November 14th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the PSC office. The meeting will feature an update on the Union’s efforts surrounding CUNY’s Workplace Violence Prevention Program, as well as discussion and reports on the state of CUNY campuses. Learn more.

PSC Chapters Organize to Demand Funding for Adjunct Health Insurance

To keep the Adjunct Health Insurance issue visible throughout the University, PSC chapters have been distributing posters and buttons throughout their campuses. PSC’s Bronx Community College chapter held a rally in support of funding for adjunct health insurance last week. Other chapters are passing resolutions, collecting petition signatures and scheduling meetings with their college presidents. To get active in the campaign, come to a campus meeting or contact your chapter chair. Organizing materials and a list of helpful actions are also available here.

Labor Goes to the Movies Presents “Twenty-Four Eyes” (Kinoshita, 1954)

The theme of this year’s film series is “Lessons,” explored this week in an award-winning film by the prolific Japanese director Keisuke Kinoshita. “Twenty-Four Eyes” traces the twenty-year relationship between a teacher and her twelve students over a period spanning world-wide economic collapse and World War II. The film will be presented this Friday evening in the Union Hall from 6:00-9:00 PM. Learn more here.
