This Week in the PSC (08.19.13): PSC Calls for an Unbiased Review of Pathways

PSC Calls for an Unbiased Review of Pathways

The June 2011 Board of Trustees resolution that established Pathways mandates annual reviews of all Pathways policies and processes, beginning in 2013. The resolution is silent on who will conduct the review and how it will be conducted. In An Open Letter to Chairperson Schmidt on the First Annual Review of Pathways, dated August 15, PSC President Barbara Bowen called for an unbiased, faculty-driven review of the curriculum.

“An unbiased review is especially important in the context of a vote of No Confidence,” Pres. Bowen said in the letter, which also objected to Chairperson Schmidt’s failure to provide a substantive response to the demand represented by the No Confidence vote. “The CUNY community and the broader public will not accept as legitimate a review process controlled by those who have an interest in maintaining Pathways over the objections of elected faculty bodies. The reviewers must be independent and the process transparent.” Read the full letter.

Last Chance to Reserve Space on the Bus to the 50th Anniversary March on Washington

This is your last chance to join the PSC contingent that is going to the 50th Anniversary March on Washington. The deadline to reply is Tuesday, August 20 at 5:30 PM. All you have to do is sign up by clicking here and get on the bus on Saturday, August 24. The departure time from New York is at 4:00 AM because the demonstration starts at 8:00 AM to avoid the worst heat of the day. Buses must depart from Washington no later than 3:30 PM.

One more thing: the PSC would like to honor members who participated in the march in 1963. Please let us know if you were an original participant by emailing Sam Rasiotis at [email protected].

Help Elect PSC’s Endorsed Mayoral Candidate, Bill de Blasio

New York City has a once-in-a generation opportunity to make a dramatic change in City government. The candidate for mayor endorsed by the PSC, Bill de Blasio, is now leading in the polls. There is a real chance that New York could have a progressive mayor whose defining commitment, The New York Times reported, is to address economic and educational inequality. The latest edition of Clarion published a Q&A with De Blasio. It’s posted here on the PSC website and members can click here to read a special message from PSC Pres. Barbara Bowen with information on how to volunteer to help elect Bill de Blasio and the other candidates endorsed by the PSC.
