NYS Budget Update
Both the State Senate and Assembly have passed one-house budget resolutions that increase investment in CUNY. The resolutions name the priorities of the two houses and set the table for this last week of budget negotiations. The Senate proposes a $40 million increase in operating support for the senior colleges. The Assembly would increase senior college support by $12.1 million in a CUNY Labor Contingency Reserve. Both houses would increase funding for CUNY community colleges by $100 per FTE student ($6.3 million). Click here to learn more about the one-house budgets.
LAWMAKERS AIM TO FINIALIZE THE STATE BUDGET BY THURSDAY
THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO TELL ALBANY TO INVEST IN CUNY BEFORE THE BUDGET PASSES
You May Receive a Call from the PSC about the Budget
PSC members living in key legislative districts will receive calls to their home phones from the union about the budget over the next few days. The caller will explain briefly about funding for CUNY in the final budget negotiations and will offer to patch you through immediately to your legislator. If you get a call, please let your legislator know that increasing CUNY’s operating budget is critical to CUNY students’ success.
Send an E-fax:
• Send this new letter to your state legislators. It urges them to fight hard for a final state budget that makes the maximum possible investment in CUNY students’ success.
Make A Phone Call:
• Click this link to place a call to your state legislators via the NYSUT Member Action Center. The link takes you to a page where you must fill in your name, address and phone number.
• After submitting your information, the next step is a page that lists your legislators with buttons labeled “click to call.” When you click the button your phone will ring and you’ll be connected to your legislator’s office.
• The page with the “click to call” buttons has talking points you can use for the call. But feel free to use examples from your own experience at CUNY to make the case for greater investment.
$7K Advocacy Day, Albany—Tues., Apr. 24
Help Build the Power We Need To Win!
The PSC is demanding $7,000 per course minimum pay for adjuncts at the bargaining table. Now it’s our job to build the power—and win the funding—necessary to realize the demand. The campaign to more than double adjuncts’ pay will be waged not at the bargaining table, but in the streets, the press, the workplace and the halls of power.
PSC members representing every part of our union will travel to Albany on Tuesday, April 24 to make the case for $7K and inform legislators about the vital role adjunct faculty play in educating CUNY students. Click here to sign up for this one-day event and click here for a flier to share with colleagues. The bus will leave NYC early in the morning and return later that evening. When you sign up, a PSC organizer will contact you with more information.
