PSC Statement on the Results of the NYC Democratic Primary

Statement from James Davis, President, PSC/CUNY on the results of the New York City Democratic Primary
June 25, 2025

This election cycle shows PSC’s growing political strength as early supporters of a strategy to defeat former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic Primary for Mayor. The union endorsed a two tiered slate urging members to rank in any order Adrienne Adams, Brad Lander or Zohran Mamdani as the top three candidates and fill out the remaining ballot with Zellnor Myrie and Michael Blake.

Zohran Mamdani, who has shown up for CUNY students and PSC members time and time again in the State Assembly, ran an exceptionally skillful campaign. By cross endorsing each other, Mamdani and Lander manifested the best the Democratic party has to offer, not just for public higher education, but also the diverse communities that CUNY serves.

PSC members will keep our sleeves rolled up, ready to continue campaigning for Zohran in the General Election, partnering with him to make CUNY the extraordinary public university system that our city deserves.

Congratulations also go out to PSC-prioritized council candidates and CUNY champions Shahana Hanif, Alexa Avilés and Pierina Sanchez for decisively winning their City Council re-election races. Harvey Epstein and Elsie Encarnacion are within striking distance of a win once ranked choice votes are tabulated.

Last night’s election results are clear: New Yorkers want bold, progressive leaders who fight for CUNY, union members and students.
