New PSC – CUNY Rising Ads Urge New Yorkers to Tell Their Electeds: Support The New Deal for CUNY

Feb 28, 2023

The PSC, in coalition with the CUNY Rising Alliance, launched a digital ad campaign this week calling on New Yorkers to contact their elected officials to support and fund the New Deal for CUNY (ND4C). The ads, which are set to run almost 1000 times on TV in NYC and Albany and on multiple social and online media platforms for several weeks, feature a BMCC student Abigail Essiful-Stiles and Medgar Evers English Professor Victoria Chevalier. They are narrated by Hunter College student Riya Patel.

“Imagine our potential if we had the resource we need. If we didn’t worry about tuition increases. If we had enough full-time professors, mental health counselors, advisors…”

The New Deal for CUNY legislation, supported by the CUNY Rising Alliance and introduced by Senator Andrew Gounardes and Assembly Member Karines Reyes, is a $1.7 billion, five-year framework for reversing decades of disinvestment in CUNY. The bill (S2146/A4425), which is supported by some of New York’s most prominent labor leaders and the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus, seeks to restore CUNY as a tuition-free institution.  It would also set minimum staff-to-student ratios for full-time faculty, academic advisors and mental health counselors, establish pay parity for adjunct faculty, and rebuild CUNY’s aging infrastructure.

Send the letter to your NYS legislators urging them to fund the New Deal for CUNY. I you live out of state use your campus address to send the letter.
