Urge them to increase funding for CUNY in the final budget

Call Governor Kathy Hochul and Legislative Leaders

April 2024

Call Governor Kathy Hochul today.

The Senate and Assembly have proposed millions in new investments, but Governor Hochul holds a lot of power in the negotiations.

Call her today to urge her to deliver a final budget with big increases for CUNY that will fund CUNY priorities and stave off deep cuts even as enrollment is rebounding after the pandemic.

Make a call between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. so you can talk to a person. Dial 518-474-8390.

SAMPLE SCRIPT

Hi, I’m [name], a resident of [borough/town] and a CUNY [faculty/staff] member.

I’m calling to urge Governor Hochul to support the Legislature’s position that CUNY funding should be increased by $70 million dollars.

CUNY is an economic mobility creator that strengthens our workforce, economy and tax base. Remember the value of CUNY! We need additional funding to stave off deep cuts to academic departments and student services.

[Give an example from your office/department if you want to.]

Call Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins

Dial (518) 455-2585

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie

Dial 518-455-3791

Passing a final budget that fails to make significant, impactful new state investments in CUNY’s operating budget would be a deeply regrettable missed opportunity.

I’m calling to thank the legislature for calling for a $70 million increase in funding of CUNY, and to urge the [Majority Leader/Speaker] to fight to include the maximum possible increase in funding for CUNY in the final state budget.
