Big win for science research against Trump
Faculty in the sciences fighting against the deep federal cuts to research can claim a victory this month. Research could use the help, as funding fell dramatically last year. The New York Times reported that on January 5 “A federal appeals court ruled..that the Trump administration could not make drastic cuts to the federal funding supporting much of the country’s medical and scientific research, reaffirming a lower court’s ruling from early last year.” The US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit said that “one of the Trump administration’s earliest attempts to kneecap universities, through proposed reductions to grants from the National Institutes of Health, was unlawful.”

PSC stands against US intervention in Venezuela
The Trump administration’s abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife on January 3 was met with widespread condemnation in the labor movement, including from PSC members. Citing a long history of US racism and imperialist intervention in Latin America, the PSC Delegate Assembly in December adopted a resolution opposing any US intervention in Venezuela.
