PSC/CUNY – MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE CHAPTER
MEETING HELD WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2013, 11.30AM IN ROOM B2008, NORMAN & MIRIAM JOHNSON LECTURE HALL
The meeting was called to order by Dr. Clinton Crawford, Chair, PSC/ MEC who welcomed all in attendance and stated the importance our timely response to the no-confidence ballots sent by PSC/CUNY regarding Pathways.
The minutes were approved subsequent to a request for the record to specify that nine (9) courses were submitted from Medgar Evers College to Pathways without proper governance.
DISCUSSION: The discussion focused on the “Proposed Interim Governance Plan” required by the Chancellery due to its perception of MEC’s College Council being dysfunctional because of its inability, for a long time, to have a quorum. Dr. Crawford noted that College Council met regularly under President Jackson and since the resignation of President Pollard.
It was pointed out that the present governance plan reflects the thinking of MEC’s founders and has served the college well for forty (40) years. Dr. Crawford posited that while some changes are needed, it must be remembered that the plan represents the world view of the people of Central Brooklyn.
IMPROVEMENT NEEDED: One improvement needed is for additional faculty on College Council. Dr. Sallie Cuffie, Chair of the MEC Faculty Senate, expressed concern “that the process is not constrained by coercion from the Chancellery or the Board of Trustees.” Concern was also expressed for the process to be timely and inclusive of the college community. Dr. Crawford informed the meeting that the PSC will facilitate conversations on the matter for the entire college community.
PATHWAYS: PSC is holding a referendum on Pathways. All members are being asked to vote “I Agree” to there being no confidence in Pathways.
IMPLEMENTATION: Interim Provost Wilks has worked to implement Pathways for this fall but Academic Advisors expressed need for clarity regarding the offerings of General Education and/or Pathways. Advisors were advised to document their concerns and send them to the Provost.
PRESIDENT’S SEARCH UPDATE: Dr. Iola Thompson, a member of the President’s Search Committee, reported that the committee met, was given its charge by Chancellor Goldstein and cut-off date for applications was set for April 15, 2013. Serious deliberations were scheduled to begin on April 26 and the time-line given for the new president to be in place was the end of June, 2013. Dr. Thompson noted that this unrealistic timeline has been voiced to the Chancellor.
