This Week in the PSC

This Week in the PSC (11.09.15): CUNY's Unacceptable Offer

Nov 09, 2015

CUNY’s unacceptable offer

CUNY management’s contract proposal falls far short of what is needed to pay PSC members decently for the important work we do. It also fails to provide the investment needed to protect high-quality education at CUNY. Our last raise was in October 2009, and our contract expired in 2010. Here is Chancellor Milliken’s economic proposal: 2010: 0%, 2011: 0%, 2012: 0%, 2013: 0%, 2014: 1% (on April 20), 2015: 1% (on April 20), 2016: 3% (on April 20), 1% (on October 19) The total, before compounding, is 6% over 6 years. That means a salary “increase” below the level of inflation-in other words, a salary cut. Read President Bowen’s message.

Mass Meeting for All CUNY Faculty and Professional Staff–Thurs., Nov. 19, 6:30 PM

The PSC will hold a mass meeting on Thurs., Nov. 19 in The Great Hall at The Cooper Union, 7 East 7th Street in Manhattan. Come hear updates from the bargaining table and from concurrent political and legislative campaigns. Ask questions and join the discussion about the strike authorization vote. And get trained to help mobilize your colleagues for a powerful vote. Download this flier to share with colleagues. Click here to RSVP.

Press Coverage of the Nov. 4 Blockade at CUNY Central

Fifty three CUNY faculty and professional staff were arrested on Wed., Nov. 4 demanding a contract that will ensure a quality education for CUNY’s 500,000 students. Click here to see the extensive media coverage the action received, including the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Daily News, and four TV networks.

Fight for $15 Day of Action—Tues., Nov. 10

Rally at Foley Square, 4:00-6:00 PM

Writing in this morning’s Daily News, Albor Ruiz made the point that fast food workers and CUNY adjuncts are fighting the same fight for a livable wage. Fight for $15 folks turned out in solidarity with PSC members last week. PSC members will be part of the action tomorrow, Tues., Nov. 10, as Fight for $15 mounts another national day of action. The day-long set of NYC-based actions are detailed in this flier. Throughout the day, adjunct faculty represented by the PSC will join underpaid working people from across the city to take a stand for work that pays enough to sustain their families. Other PSC members will be there as well to be in solidarity with their colleagues and fellow workers. The day will culminate with a 4:00 PM rally at Foley Square followed by a 6:00 PM march. A CUNY adjunct will speak on behalf of low-wage academic workers at the rally. Learn more.

#MillionStudentMarch—Thurs., Nov. 12

This Week, on Thurs., Nov. 12, students across the country are organizing the #MillionStudentMarch, a day of coordinated local actions on hundreds of campuses. The #MillionStudentMarch platform calls for tuition-free public college, a cancellation of all student debt, and a $15 minimum wage for all campus workers. Actions are being organized by students at BMCC, Brooklyn College, City College, College of Staten Island and Hunter College. Click here to connect with a march near you.
Labor Goes to the Movies Presents Rear Window—Nov. 13
The union’s film series explores the theme of “surveillance” on Fri., Nov. 13 in the PSC Union Hall (61 Broadway, 16th floor) with a screening of Rear Window (Hitchcock, 1954). An immobilized photojournalist, James Stewart, uses his telephoto lens to scrutinize the remotest corners of his neighbors’ NYC apartments to discover their most carefully guarded secrets, including a murder. Made in 1954, some see this as a sub textual reference to McCarthyism, which makes it even more relevant today with high tech spying. Refreshments provided. $2 suggested donation. Doors open at 6 PM.
