ICE Out for Good March, Fri, Jan 23rd

Thousands of New Yorkers will gather for a mass rally and march in solidarity with Minneapolis-St. Paul and their call for a national “Day of Truth and Freedom” as they face an expanding occupation and escalating ICE violence. After a short program, the march will proceed from Union Square at 14th Street, past the Palantir offices at 18th Street, Home Depot on 23rd Street, and Jeff Bezos’s apartment building on 5th Avenue. This is our moment to demand an end to billionaire funded brutality, to shut down tech for ICE, and to say loudly: Hands Off Our Communities! PSC members will gather at 3:45 PM at E. 16th Street and Union Square West on the park side of the street, near the subway entrances (map link). Dress warm and look for union staff in orange vests carrying red and white signs.

Governor Kathy Hochul released her Executive Budget for Fiscal Year 2027 on Tuesday, January 20. The budget has no tuition hike and it expands the Governor’s CUNY Reconnect initiative, which provides free community college for students 22-55 years of age studying in certain high-demand fields. Preliminary reports indicate a modest increase in operating funding for the CUNY senior colleges. PSC leaders and staff are working with our partners at NYSUT to develop a thorough analysis.

PSC President James Davis released the following statement about the budget plan:

“Governor Hochul’s Executive Budget holds the line on tuition, expands access to free community college, and increases CUNY’s operating budget. These welcome investments are essential to making life in New York more affordable. So too, however, is ensuring the ultra-rich pay their fair share in taxes. Revenue raisers are essentially absent from the Governor’s plan, but they must be in the final enacted budget.

“Fairly taxing wealthy corporations and the rich is how Albany can end CUNY’s full-time faculty and staff shortage and fund a New Deal for CUNY. A truly progressive revenue platform will protect schools and hospitals and the many public services on which we rely by offsetting the MAGA Congress’s cuts to health care and food assistance. It can fund universal childcare and free buses and safeguard our state and city from additional federal cuts.

“Tax the rich for a more affordable New York!”

PSC members are going to Albany Wednesday, February 25th to rally to demand that New York tax the rich to fund CUNY and a more affordable New York.

The labor movement, Our Time, and grassroots groups big and small are joining forces to make it impossible for lawmakers to ignore our demands for a more affordable life and the fair-share taxation needed to fund it.

Both the PSC and Our Time support a platform of progressive revenue raisers that would generate $17 billion in annual revenue for the state and $4 billion for New York City. Progressive State Income Tax Bill (S.1622/A.1281) Expands the existing personal income tax brackets in New York State, and more than doubles the top marginal tax rate to raise an additional $10 billion in annual state revenue.

Fair Share Act (S.8577/A.8953) Authorizes New York City to charge an additional 2% on all income earned in excess of $1 million to raise an additional $4 billion in annual tax revenue for New York City.

Corporate Tax on the Most Profitable Corporations (S.953/A.1971) Increases the corporate tax rate to 8% for corporate income exceeding $2.5 million, 12% for corporate income exceeding $10 million, and 14% for corporate income exceeding $20 million to raise an additional $7 billion in annual state revenue.

The PSC/CUNY BIPOC Working Group will honor Black History Month with a powerful evening of dialogue, as we welcome labor activists, union leaders, and historians for an engaging panel discussion examining the intersection of race and worker justice. PSC members are continuing to bear witness and support immigrants who are called to the courts at 26 Federal Plaza. Join your colleagues as we escort our neighbors out of the courts. Meet any Thursday or Friday at 7:30 AM in front of 319 Broadway, across the street from 26 Federal Plaza. Starting in February, we will only courtwatch on Fridays. PSC training is required to participate and a refresher is strongly recommended if you were trained more than two months ago. The labor movement is standing with nurses striking for a fair contract with guaranteed safe staffing, healthcare benefits, and protections from workplace violence. For the Spring 2026 semester, teaching adjuncts are scheduled to be paid on eight successive adjunct pay dates. At the senior colleges, the first pay date is Thursday, February 5 and the last pay date will be Thursday, May 14. At most community colleges, the first pay date will be Friday, February 13 and the last pay date will be Friday, May 22. LaGuardia, Kingsborough, and Guttman community colleges are on a different schedule. Their first and last Spring session pay dates are, respectively, Friday, March 13 and Friday, June 18. All dates are posted here on the PSC website.

PSC President James Davis sent a letter to Chancellor Matos Rodríguez earlier this month demanding that adjuncts are paid on time. “Too many of our members live in precarity, without the stability and respect of an on-time paycheck,” he wrote. “We will not simply wait to see our colleagues compensated.”

Contact your campus HR office about obtaining a salary advance if you do not receive your first pay check on time. And be sure to contact your PSC chapter chair and adjunct grievance counselor as well.
