Public Hearing of the CUNY Board of Trustees
Monday, October 16, 4:30 PM, City College
Our Contract for #APeoplesCUNY campaign continues over the next five weeks with local campus actions and five borough-wide events.
A demonstration of unity at the October 16th public hearing of the CUNY Board of Trustees at City College is at the center of the October 16-20 Manhattan week of action – and a union-wide priority! The CUNY Board of Trustees sets the University’s strategic vision and agenda for contract negotiations and approves any final agreement. They need to hear from us! Tell us you’ll be there either to testify about the value of the PSC’s contract demands or to show solidarity and support.
The October 16th public hearing is an in-person event; there is no remote option. It will be held at City College in the Marian Anderson Theater in Aaron Davis Hall, 129 Convent Avenue. Email pre-registration to [email protected] prior to THE OFFICIAL CUNY DEADLINE, 12 NOON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13 is required to testify. No registration is required to simply attend the hearing. The PSC will send the registration email to CUNY on your behalf if you fill this form out BY THE PSC DEADLINE, 5PM THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12. Oral testimony is limited to three minutes, and you are encouraged to submit a written version of your testimony, which can be any length. Here is the official notice from the Board.
An optional online how-to-testify training from the PSC will be held Tuesday, October 10, 6:30 PM. Register for the Zoom training session.
Free Screening of The Five Demands
The Five Demands tells the story of a student strike that changed the face of higher education. In April 1969, a small group of Black and Puerto Rican students struggled against institutional racism and shut down the City College of New York. The student takeover at City College took place over 50 years ago, but it is directly relevant to today’s struggle for a fully funded, high quality, and accessible City University of New York. Please join us!
The Professional Staff Congress (PSC/CUNY) and CUNY Rising Alliance will present a free screening and discussion of The Five Demands in the new PSC/CUNY Union Hall (25 Broadway, 15th Floor) Wednesday, October 11 from 6:30-8:30 PM. RSVP here to secure your spot! Doors open 6:00 PM. Snacks provided. Bring photo ID to enter the building.

Member Benefits: Catastrophe Major Medical Plan
Open Enrollment Ends October 13
Final Informational Webinars Oct 11th and 12th at 4 PM
The Catastrophe Major Medical Plan, sponsored by the Member Benefits program of our statewide affiliate NYSUT, is offering an open enrollment until October 13, 2023 — with an effective date of January 1, 2024. PSC members can learn more about the Catastrophe Major Medical Plan and an upcoming open enrollment opportunity by registering for one of two remaining webinars hosted by NYSUT’s Member Benefits program during the enrollment period on October 11th and 12th.
This rare opportunity is open only to dues-paying union members. (Not a member? Join the PSC here!) The CMM Plan offers supplemental coverage for you and your eligible family members. Once the out-of-pocket deductible has been satisfied, this Plan provides benefits for eligible expenses that your basic plan does not fully cover, including prescription drugs. This coverage is not long-term care or nursing home insurance. But it does include limited nursing/convalescent home benefits, home health care benefits up to 25 hours per week, a $1000 critical illness benefit, and more. Click here for the announcement, explainer video and enrollment information.
Catastrophic Sick Leave Bank
Open Enrollment Period: Oct. 1-31
This is a PSC-CUNY contractual program. It is different from the similarly named Catastrophe Major Medical supplemental insurance offered by NYSUT Member Benefits.
CUNY’s Catastrophic Sick Leave Bank is a pool of voluntarily donated sick leave and annual leave available for potential use as sick leave by all annual full-time employees at CUNY (instructional and classified) who are also donors to the bank. The Catastrophic Sick Leave Bank, which arose out of a PSC contract campaign, exemplifies worker solidarity and mutual support. It gives CUNY workers a way to offer aid to colleagues dealing with a catastrophic illness and provides a place to turn for help if they face a similar need. The open enrollment period for the Catastrophic Sick Leave Bank is October 1 – 31. Workers must donate leave in a program year to be eligible to receive leave in that year (up to 90 days). Click here for program requirements and to learn how to donate and receive leave from the bank.
