Testify About Pathways—Monday, June 18
If you feel strongly about protecting the quality of a CUNY education, please sign up to testify about Pathways at the public hearing of the CUNY Board of Trustees at Hostos Community College on June 18. PSC Communications Coordinator Fran Clark (646-459-6882) can help you register to speak (You must sign up in advance.) and help coordinate your testimony with that of others. Speakers have only three minutes. The latest issue of Clarion and the What is Pathways? fact sheet are also great resources. If you want to support the fight against Pathways by attending the hearing but not testifying, click here to let us know you will be there.
Tell the City Council, It’s Time to Invest in CUNY
The public can testify before the City Council about any budget issue during the Finance Committee’s only public comment period next Wednesday, June 6 beginning at 4:00 PM at the Council Chambers at City Hall. If you plan to craft your own three-minute testimony about the need for more funding at your campus, PSC Communications Coordinator Fran Clark is glad to be a resource, and the PSC’s City Budget Campaign webpage has great resource materials.
If you haven’t already done so, please send an Act Now letter to the New York City Council to add your voice to the union’s demands for greater investment in CUNY and full funding restorations for Vallone Scholarships, the Black Male Initiative, the Murphy Institute for Worker Education and other CUNY programs.
Tell Albany: Pass the NY Dream Act
Four weeks remain in this year’s state legislative calendar. In each This Week in the PSC for the rest of the session, we will highlight a bill from our list of State Legislative Initiatives, and urge you to take action.
This week: The New York Dream Act. This bill makes undocumented immigrant students who graduate from high school or earn a GED in New York State eligible to receive state and local financial aid. An estimated 4,500 undocumented students now attend CUNY, and many more would be able to if need-based financial aid, such as the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), were available to them. See the PSC’s support memo. Read the bill and list of sponsors. Send a letter in support of the bill to your elected representatives in Albany.
