Town Hall – Make Billionaires Pay!

#MakeBillionairesPay Town Hall to build a statewide movement to win progressive tax policies to meet NY's most critical needs.

Event Date:
Saturday, February 8, 2020 – 11:00am
Event Type7:

#MakeBillionairesPay Town Hall to build a statewide movement to win progressive tax policies to meet NY’s most critical needs.

There is money in this rich, powerful state for free, high-quality public higher education for all who need and desire it. There is money for a New Deal for CUNY—and for universally great schools, quality health care, better public services and an expanded, well-maintained stock of public housing, too—if we make the progressive political choice to redistribute a fair measure of resources from those who have the most to those who have the least in New York State.

Make Billionaires Pay Town Hall

Join us for a Town Hall with New York State legislators, to learn about progressive revenue options to fund our state. The meeting is being hosted by PSC at its union hall, 61 Broadway, 16th floor.

Trains: 4/5 to Wall Street, 1 to Rector St, J/Z to Broad St.
Sponsored by: Housing Justice for All, New York Communities for Change, Strong Economy For All Coalition, VOCAL-NY

New York is one of the wealthiest states in the nation, home to Wall Street and some of the richest individuals, corporations and industries, including 112 billionaires with total wealth over $525 billion.

At the same time, over 92,000 New Yorkers are homeless and 600,000 are unstably housed. Recent figures estimate that NYCHA is owed upwards of $40 billion; the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority is among the neediest in the nation. Our public schools are still waiting for $4 billion in court-ordered funding. Proposed changes to Medicaid funding could lead to healthcare cuts and further impoverish struggling cities and counties. We need to fund a solution to the climate disaster. With the opioid crisis, cities and towns across the state need supportive housing, mental health and substance abuse services to serve New Yorkers.

We invite you to attend a town hall on progressive tax policies, backed by a majority of New Yorkers, including a wealth tax on billionaires, ultra-millionaires income tax, targeted Wall Street taxes on stock buybacks and carried interest and a pied-a-terre tax on vacant luxury second homes that will allow New York State to reform our tax code, reinvest in our people and communities, tackle these crisis issues, and reduce extreme inequality.

CUNY's Microsoft email has a security block for mass mailings that has held up some of our emails. A few thousand members have already voted, and we will all have the chance to vote. AAA believes they have a workaround, and they will again send out the message to all eligible members who have not yet voted. The emails will begin to go out in batches tonight, Monday, December 23rd. It may take a while to land in your inbox, (spam, or junk mail.)
