Environmental Justice Committee

Environmental Justice Committee Meetings will be in two parts — (1) a business meeting and (2) a speaker. Until further notice, meetings will be on Zoom, 5:30-7:30 pm.

  The business meeting will include a report from the committee’s working groups ad a welcome to the PSC’s new Executive Director, Dean Hubbard.
  Speakers on NY State and Federal Climate Campaigns

  Guest speakers:

  —Stephan Edel is the Coalition Coordinator of NYRenews and was the NY Project Director for the Working Families Party, a union and community organizer and is a graduate of the CUNY School of Law. Among many projects and jobs, Stephan has been working on environmental and labor issues for over a decade and is a highly knowledgeable policy expert with practical organizing and conceptualizing skills that center labor and justice. Stephan will give us a clear overview of NY State organizing around climate and the NY efforts to advance the THRIVE agenda, the climate agenda of the Democratic Party and the legislative result of the Green New Deal.

  —Lauren Burke is the Organizing Director for the Labor Network for Sustainability, a national organization of unionists engaged in climate justice, and a Senior Atlantic Fellow for Social and Economic Equity at the London School of Economics. Previously she organized with UNITE HERE, building power with food service and hotel workers for over a decade. She will talk about union efforts nationally to advance the boldest and most progressive worker-oriented climate justice policies possible. She’ll help us figure out how to plug into that work
