PSC/CUNY – MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE CHAPTER MEETING HELD WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2018

PSC/CUNY – MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE CHAPTER
MEETING HELD WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2018, 11.30AM IN ROOM AB1-312

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Clinton Crawford, Chair, PSC/ MEC who welcomed all.

The minutes of November 29, 2017 were approved as read.

First to be covered was the report from the most recent Labor-Management meeting:

  • Electronic Keys continue to be problematic regarding re-activation and difficulty in use at door.
  • Bathrooms: floors need to be checked by administration.
  • New Hires’ Handbook not yet available
  • Portables: some are still in need of Smart equipment.
  • Thermostat: Campus-wide, some rooms are very hot while others are very cold, freezing.
  • Parking Lot: (a) The question remains, “Who monitors the cameras and control the data?” (b) Lighting still in need of improvement because the back sections of both AB1 and Bedford buildings parking lots continue to be dark; (c) Questions: 1) Evening passes begin at 5.00pm but why no entrance at 4.50pm? 2) Why does Medgar Evers College pay more for parking than other CUNY campuses?

AGENDA:

  • PSC Membership: Deidre Brill, PSC’s Director of Organizing, informed the meeting that of 209 adjuncts at Medgar Evers College, 100+ are not members of the PSC, and that there are 18 fulltime faculty who are also not members. The PSC’s aim is to have all adjuncts and fulltime faculty sign the blue membership cards in order to meet the challenge of JANUS which is expected to break by June, 2018. The appeal went out for adjuncts to be in attendance at PSC meetings.
  • Long-term Plans for PSC/MEC Chapter: Suggestions: (1) Need for social and political opportunities to connect in order to facilitate the tenure process and impact campus culture. (2) Each one encouraged to bring another member to the next PSC meeting. (3) Development of reading/discussion groups focused on policies, faculty/HEO publications with no ramifications for academic promotions. (4) Create a vehicle that would enable this body (PSC) to remain engaged and make academic progress.

All were encouraged to create sub-groups and work at increasing the union membership aimed at influencing the new contract.
