Take action to stop a Grand Bargain that hurts millions of Americans

SafetyNetFiscalCliff.jpg

[While the call-in date was this past Friday, November 30, you can still use the AFL-CIO Call Congress Hotline (888-659-9401) to contact Senators Schumer and Gillibrand on this issue, if you have not done so already. More will be posted, shortly, on the Thursday, December 6th event.]

This week we have a chance to send a strong message to Washington while negotiations over the so-called “fiscal cliff” are going on. It’s critical that New York’s congressional delegation oppose the right-wing agenda of cuts and privatization that threatens Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Instead of cutting programs that millions of low-income and middle-class Americans depend on, Congress should end the Bush tax cuts and increase taxes for the wealthy, as President Obama has advocated. Here is how you can help:

Friday, November 30, Call Your Senators and Congress Member

Be one of the millions of union households that call Washington this Friday in defense of the safety net. The AFL-CIO Call Congress Hotline (888-659-9401) can connect you to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and to your congress member. The hotline will play a recording of a sample message before connecting you. You can also download a sample script prepared by PSC’s Social Safety Net Committee.

Other Actions

  • Thursday, December 6, save the date for a mass action. The City’s labor movement is in rapid-response mode and details of the action are still being planned, but the Central Labor Council is supporting a Day of Action for the Safety Net and fair taxation next Thursday, December 6. Community groups and unions will likely organize feeder events earlier in the day followed by combined mass action at 4:30 P.M. in Herald Square. PSC will send out more information as it becomes available.
  • Saturday, December 1, take the People’s Ferry Trip to press Representative Michael Grimm of Staten Island to protect the Social Safety Net. (Learn more.)
