The PSC endorses Bill de Blasio for Mayor for his strategic vision for CUNY and his focus on ending economic inequality. The union also endorses Letitia James for Public Advocate, Scott Stringer for Comptroller and 39 progressive candidates for City Council and borough president. To maximize the power of your vote, vote for de Blasio and PSC’s other candidates on the Working Families Party (WFP) ballot line; it signals that you expect a candidate to fight for progressive change in our City. Campus Equity Every Week
Last week PSC marked Campus Equity Week by sharing some of the job-insecurity testimony adjuncts have submitted to the union. You can read their testimony here. If you’re an adjunct, submit your story on this web form. The union’s job security for adjuncts campaign is continuing. You can support the PSC’s demands for adjuncts in the current round of collective bargaining by submitting a story, getting involved in your local chapter, or by attending the next First Friday Committee meeting of adjunct leaders and activist on Fri., Dec. 6 in the PSC Union Hall.
Labor Goes to the Movies Presents Leviathan—Fri., Nov. 8
Leviathan (France/UK/USA, Castaing-Taylor and Paravel, 2012) explores the theme of “work” by recording the sounds and images of a commercial fishing boat off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Without a word of commentary, with virtually no audible dialogue, smothered under the unceasing roar of the machinery and the sea, the filmmakers shared multiple lightweight cameras with the crew, capturing the intense sensorial experience of work on the boat. The film withholds judgment on the activity of the boat and crew and allows no privileged status to the humans. The filmmakers’ describe their approach as a way to show the human character as “part of a much larger sphere of nature.” Doors open at 6:00 PM Fri., Nov. 8 in the PSC-CUNY Union Hall, 61 Broadway, 16th floor.
