This Week in the PSC

This Week in the PSC (9.19.11): September 26th Demonstration for Adjunct Health Insurance

Sep 19, 2011

September 26th Demonstration for Adjunct Health Insurance

Next Monday, September 26, at 4:00 PM hundreds of your CUNY colleagues will gather at the CUNY Board of Trustees meeting at Baruch College. Please join us in attending the Board meeting and demonstrating outside of Baruch College (55 Lexington Ave. at 24th St.), where the meeting is held. Be there if you are an adjunct whose own health insurance is threatened. Be there if you would be ashamed to work in a university that allowed a major part of its workforce to lose their health insurance. Stand up for your colleagues, for your sense of what a university is, for yourself.

Also, we need your signature before the 26th on both the letter and petition in support of maintaining adjunct health insurance. Do it today. Here’s what else you can do:

  • Contact Brian Graf to join the organizing effort to save adjunct health care;
  • Tell us your story if you’re an adjunct who receives health insurance from the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund;
  • Share a statement of solidarity, if you’re a full-timer who thinks CUNY should fully fund health insurance for adjuncts.
  • Use #AdjunctHI to follow and discuss the issue on Twitter

The September issue of Clarion has a special section devoted to the Adjunct Health Care campaign. Read the online version here.

Labor Goes to the Movies Film Series Starts Friday

Now in its eleventh season, the Labor Goes to the Movies film series will focus on the theme of “Lessons” this year. This season’s first film night features two short films with wildly divergent takes on education: Zero for Conduct (Vigo, 1933) and Binta and the Great Idea (Javier Fesser, 2004). We’ll be screening both films this Friday evening in the Union Hall (61 Broadway, 16th Floor) from 6:00-9:00 PM. Learn more about the film series and this week’s movies here.

Defending Public Higher Education Conference—Save the Date and Spread the Word

The PSC and other groups are sponsoring a free, day-long conference at the CUNY Graduate Center on October 7. Join us for a day of collective thinking about the challenges facing public higher education, and help define strategies that will reverse the disturbing trend of disinvestment in higher education. Tell Congress to Pass the American Jobs Act

The PSC is partnering with our national affiliate, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), to press Congress to pass President Obama’s American Jobs Act. Passing the bill will save and create hundreds of thousands of well-paying jobs and grow our economy by making investments in our nation’s crumbling infrastructure. It will also maintain support for critical public services, such as education and job training, and provide $235 million for community college infrastructure needs in New York State. Please take a moment right now to send the AFT letter to your congressional representatives.
