This Week in the PSC (8.8.11): In solidarity with Verizon workers

Aug 08, 2011

In solidarity with Verizon workers—sign the petition

45,000 CWA and IBEW members are now on strike to stop Verizon’s attempt to gut their contract. Despite record profits, Verizon is demanding concessions that would let them outsource more jobs, slash sick days and holidays, eliminate benefits for injured workers, and cut retirees’ healthcare benefits. Sign the petition telling Verizon to stop attacking the middle class and join us on the picket line at Verizon headquarters (140 West Street in Manhattan). PSC members will be there every weekday at noon. As working people and as members of a union, we all have a direct stake in this strike. Contact Rob Murray for further information

Recent market turbulence and what it means to your pension

Last week’s sharp reductions in the stock market and Friday’s decision from Standard & Poor’s to downgrade the U.S. credit rating from AAA to AA+ may lead to increased market volatility. On the website, we’ve compiled some articles about S&P’s downgrade and how it may affect the market, as well as relevant links to PSC members’ retirement plan providers.

Sad news about the loss of a colleague

As we were finalizing today’s edition of This Week, we learned that Carl Williams, PSC’s chapter chair at John Jay College, died on August 7 following surgery. Carl was a much-loved counselor in the SEEK department who taught Mathematics, Communication Skills and Freshman Colloquium. A modest and principled union leader, Carl was also exceptionally dedicated to CUNY students. He will be sorely missed. As we learn more about funeral arrangements, we will share them with you.
