This Week at PSC (3.21.11): Take Direct Action to Stop Albany’s Austerity Budget

Mar 21, 2011

Take Direct Action to Stop Albany’s Austerity Budget
We need you in Albany this Wednesday! Join the PSC for a peaceful, non-violent direct action to stop the passage of a budget that puts the interests of corporations and the super-rich above the needs of CUNY and millions of ordinary New Yorkers. If you believe in democratic higher education; if you refuse to stand by while the budget is balanced on the backs of children, the poor and people of color; if you don’t want to face a round of contract negotiations that begins with demands for concessions; if you’ve been waiting for the labor movement in New York to wake up—this is the action for you. Sign up by noon on Tuesday by contacting Rob Murray at [email protected].

State of Emergency Protest: Day of Rage against the Cuts
New York’s unions, students and community groups have joined forces to fight proposed cuts to education, healthcare and social services and push back against threats to collective bargaining rights. On Thursday, March 24th PSC will join our coalition partners at the State of Emergency Protest: Day of Rage Rally against the Cuts. The action will begin with a 5:00pm rally at City Hall. At 6:00 protestors will march from City Hall to Wall Street. Learn more on the web at http://march24ny.wordpress.com/.

Upcoming Reappointments Dates
Notice of reappointment and non-reappointment for Higher Education Series members in their first and second years of service are due on April 1. For instructional staff in tenure bearing and certificate bearing titles hired on 9/1/10 who are in their first year of service, notice is due on or before April 1. Lecturers in their second year of service should also receive their letters of reappointment by April 1. If you do not receive a letter, or if you receive a letter of non-reappointment, contact your local campus grievance counselor or contact the PSC office for a HEO or faculty grievance counselor at 212-354-1252 as soon as possible. The deadline for filing these grievances is May 13, 2011.

Roundtable: The Impact of Popular Uprisings: Mid-East to Mid-West
Protests from Egypt to Wisconsin have captured the popular imagination and created new possibilities for progressive change. Come to the PSC Union Hall (61 Broadway, 16th Floor) on Friday March 25th for an evening of presentations and discussion on the impact of popular uprisings from the Mid-East to the Midwest. Visit the PSC website for more information. Light refreshments will be served at 5:30pm. The forum will run from 6:00-8:00pm.

Remembering the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

Friday, March 25th is the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, the deadliest industrial disaster in NYC history. Registration is closed for the Murphy Center’s conference on the fire and its legacy, but there are many other events scheduled throughout the City to commemorate this horrible incident, which galvanized the movement for labor and social justice. Visit the PSC website for a listing of events at the Fashion Institute of Technology and other locations.
