This Week in the PSC

This Week in the PSC (11.30.11): March with the PSC this Thursday for Jobs and Economic Fairness.

Nov 30, 2011

March with the PSC this Thursday for Jobs and Economic Fairness.

Workers from every corner of the City will gather again this Thursday evening to join the Central Labor Council’s March for Jobs and Economic Fairness. PSC members will join the CLC’s march to Union Square to repeat our demand for an end to policies that put the interests of the rich and super-rich ahead of the needs of CUNY students and other ordinary New Yorkers. We will assemble this Thursday, December 1 at 3:30 PM at the CUNY Graduate Center (365 5th Ave, between 34th and 35th streets) before joining the march. There will be no rally or speakers at the event, just a big visible expression of hope and solidarity. (Download a flyer.)

Agreements with CUNY for Scheduling New Year’s Day and Adjuncts’ Winter Session Workload

The PSC has entered into two side-agreements concerning the January calendar: New Year’s Day (which falls on a Sunday) will be observed Thursday December 29, 2011, so most CUNY offices will be closed. Requests to take annual leave on Monday January 2, 2012 will not be unreasonably denied and adjuncts’ winter session 2012 workload will not count towards fall or spring workload limits. PSC Members Rally to Defend Students and the Right to Protest at CUNY

Hundreds of CUNY faculty and staff joined last night’s spirited informational picket and demonstration, organized by the PSC in solidarity with CUNY students’ energetic protest at the Baruch College Newman Vertical Campus. We turned out to support students and colleagues who wished to express themselves peacefully and in open assembly, without fear of intimidation or violence. We also repeated our demands for funding for adjunct health insurance, affordable tuition and the elimination of University Bylaws revisions that would undermine our rights. (See web coverage by Clarion staff and photos on Facebook.) The extensive media coverage included quotes from President Bowen in the New York Times and elsewhere.

Forum on CUNY & Race—December 9

PSC is conducting a study on how race, gender and ethnicity affect hiring, promotion, tenure and reclassification at CUNY. On Friday, December 9, the study’s research team and members of the union’s anti-racism committee will host a forum at the New York City College of Technology to discuss the project and share preliminary findings. Please plan to join us for this important discussion. (For more information and to RSVP, click here.)
