This Week in the PSC (10.15.13): Collecting Adjunct's Job-Insecurity Stories

Oct 16, 2013

Adjuncts: Share Your Job-Insecurity Story!

Job security for adjuncts is a priority demand for the PSC in the current round of collective bargaining for a new contract. To support the union’s negotiations with CUNY management about this issue, PSC is collecting stories about how job insecurity personally affects adjuncts at CUNY. Share your story at psc-cuny.org/jobsecurity.

Please tell us how you struggle with the lack of job security that comes with working as an adjunct faculty member at CUNY. Your story can help expose the vagaries and privations that are built in to the current two-tiered labor system at CUNY.
The union will post collected stories during Campus Equity Week (Oct. 27 – Nov. 2) and use them throughout the rest of the job security campaign. Stories submitted via the website may be posted online, reported in testimony or cited during contract negotiation. Names will not be used unless adjuncts give specific approval.

Volunteer Today: Help Elect a Progressive City Government

We’re halfway there! PSC members helped nominate candidates who will stand for equality and oppose austerity. But our work is only half done. We still have to help elect the union’s endorsed candidates for Mayor, Comptroller, Public Advocate and City Council. And we need a big margin of victory. Sign up here to volunteer for get-out-the-vote activities happening between now and the Nov. 5 general election. Electing our candidates and winning with a big margin matters for CUNY faculty, staff and students and for all New Yorkers.

Labor Goes to the Movies Presents Pickpocket—Fri., Oct. 18

Join us for a screening of Pickpocket (France, 1959), the second film in our 2013-2014 Labor Goes to the Movies series. The theme of this year’s series is “work.” Pickpocket is a startling appreciation of the beauty of manual work, by Robert Bresson, one of the great French precursors of the New Wave. Adapted from Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, it makes a visual ballet of a meticulous criminal craft. Doors open at 6:00 PM Fri., Oct. 18 in the PSC-CUNY Union Hall, 61 Broadway, 16th floor. Light food and drink provided.

Environmental Health and Safety Watchdogs Meeting—Mon., Oct. 21

The Watchdogs’ Healthy Buildings campaign will be on the agenda at the first health and safety meeting of the fall semester. Come learn how to identify health and safety issues in your building and get started on a protocol to deal with the issues you find. The meeting will begin with a light dinner at 5:30 PM in the union’s Justice Room, 61 Broadway 15th floor. RSVP by calling 212- 354-1252 ext. 208 or emailing [email protected]
