This Week in the PSC (10.08.13): Register to Vote and Encourage Your Students to Register Before the Fri. Oct. 11 Deadline

Oct 08, 2013

Register to Vote and Encourage Your Students to Register Before the Fri. Oct. 11 Deadline

If you or your students have not registered to vote, this is your last week to register in time to vote in the Nov. 5 General Election. Completed voter registration forms must be postmarked by the Fri., Oct. 11 voter registration deadline and mailed to the Board of Elections. In New York, you can register to vote if you are a U.S. citizen who will have resided in the City for at least 30 days and will be 18 years of age or older on election day.

For those who have never registered to vote in New York before, mailing a completed voter registration form before the deadline will add you to the voting rolls. For registered voters who have moved within New York State, mailing a completed voter registration form before the deadline will make you eligible to vote in contests for local offices that represent you and ensure that you can vote at a poll site near your home. The PSC website has voter registration resource page with more information and downloadable forms in several languages. A non-partisan classroom announcement about voter registration is available for download here on the PSC website for those faculty who wish to remind their students to register to vote. Also see the CUNY Votes webpage and the NYC Board of Elections page.

New Yorkers have the opportunity to elect a new City government this election: the offices of Mayor, Comptroller and Public Advocate are all up for a vote, and nearly half of the seats in the City Council are open due to term limits. CUNY voters can help decide the direction of our city, but only if they register and vote.
