This Week in the PSC (09.25.12): Updates on PSC Contract and Adjunct Health Insurance

Sep 25, 2012

‘We Do Not Accept That Austerity Is the Only Option’: Update on PSC Contract

Clarion staff interviewed PSC President Barbara Bowen about negotiations on a new PSC/CUNY contract for the September edition of the union’s newspaper. Read the Q&A online.

Update on Adjunct Health Insurance

In August we announced that the current adjunct health insurance had been extended through September 30. PSC continues to engage in daily negotiations with CUNY to arrive at a final agreement. The PSC’s aim is to ensure that eligible adjuncts will receive health insurance comparable to the insurance they receive now, without a break in coverage. That has been our aim since the beginning, and that continues to be our aim now. We remain focused on completing the agreement before the end of September. The PSC bargaining team appreciates that the current uncertainty about health insurance is extraordinarily difficult for those affected, and we are doing everything we can to reach resolution. Get Out the Vote –Volunteer for Wednesday Night Phone Banks

Get-out-the-vote phone banks are scheduled at the union office (61 Broadway, 15th floor) every Wednesday night from October 3 through October 31. Sign up to volunteer. We’re making calls to union households in battleground states to help re-elect President Obama and locally, to support New York candidates in key federal and state races. If you’re a member of the union, you can join the campaign via this restricted page of the PSC website. Check the website and weekly This Week in the PSC emails for more opportunities.

Get Out the Vote—Campaign for President Obama in Ohio

PSC members can volunteer for a twelve-day shift of member-to-member voter mobilization in the battleground state of Ohio. Our national affiliate, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), is sponsoring the trips, which will take place October 1-12, October 8-19, October 15-26, October 22-Nov 2 and October 29-Nov 7 in the Cincinnati, Toledo and Cleveland. Travel and other expenses will be covered by the AFT. Contact Amanda Magalhaes for more information.

First Negotiation Session Scheduled at Research Foundation Central Office

A team of PSC members from the CUNY Research Foundation Central Office will kick off negotiations on a new contract at a bargaining session September 27 at 3:30pm at the RF Central Office. The new bargaining team consists of Yolande Ogbajie (OTPS), Abel Guan (Finance), Thomas Kim and Julieann Brown (both Grants and Contracts). Seventy-five percent of the RF Central Office bargaining unit took part in a survey to help craft the demands that the team will bring to the table, and union members also voted unanimously to approve the demands.
