This Week in the PSC (09.19.17): Another Attack on Our Health Care

Sep 19, 2017

Another Attack on Our Health Care
Tell Washington to Reject the Graham-Cassidy Bill

The Graham-Cassidy bill is being sold as a compromise—but it’s not. It’s just as bad as every form of Trumpcare that we’ve seen so far and, once again, favors the powerful over the vulnerable. This bill would strip millions of their healthcare, increase premiums for working families, deny coverage for pre-existing conditions and punish states that expanded Medicaid. Write Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today and tell them to reject this bill. Even better, use this AFT web tool to call their offices.

PSC Statement on Michael Isaacson Message

The Professional Staff Congress/CUNY rejects the statement by Michael Isaacson about imagining his students dead. Isaacson’s statement is anathema to the teaching profession. It in no way represents the position of the PSC as a union or the tens of thousands of CUNY faculty—both full-time faculty and adjuncts—who choose to work at CUNY because of a profound commitment to the diverse and largely working-class students we are privileged to teach. But the right of free speech protects even repugnant speech, and every worker should be entitled to due process. The PSC will vigorously defend the due-process rights of every CUNY employee – both full time and part-time – we represent.

Show support online for IBEW Local 3 cable workers #Local3 and #SpectrumStrike

PSC members marched and rallied in solidarity with IBEW Local 3 cable workers yesterday. Unions from across the city were there to support the cable workers who have been on strike for six months, fighting against Charter/Spectrum Communications’ efforts to stop paying into workers’ pension and benefit funds. PSC members can show solidarity on social media using the hashtags #Local3 and #SpectrumStrike.

NYC Primary Results

Turn-out for last week’s primary election was a near record low with only 14% of voters eligible participating. But PSC members voted. Many thanks to the Legislative Committee members whose volunteer phone banking helped turn their colleagues out to the polls. Here are the results of the primary elections that were priorities of the PSC:

Mayor de Blasio and Public Advocate Letitia James won their primary races by definitive margins. Four of the six PSC-endorsed candidates in open City Council races won. They are Carlina Rivera (CD2), Diana Ayala (CD 8), Alicka Ampry-Samuel (CD 41) and Justin Brannan (CD 43). Two lost. Marjorie Velazquez, PSC’s candidate for Council District 13, lost a close race to Mark Gjonaj. Marti Speranza, PSC’s candidate for Council District 4, lost to Keith Powers.
