Emergency Union Chapter Meetings; We Need You There
PSC chapters are holding emergency meetings this month to plan the latest escalation of the campaign for a new PSC-CUNY contract. Most are gathering this week or next week. Dates are posted at the bottom of this email. Check the online calendar for information about your campus/worksite. At the meetings chapters are developing mobilizations plan for the Wake-up Call for Chancellor Milliken (October 1) and creating local “Teach CUNY” curricula to engage students more in the campaign (most events October 19-30). Also on the agenda: movement toward a Disruptive Mass Action in early November and a Mass Meeting of the PSC on November 19. Read about the Fall plan here and register here to let us know we can count on you in the contract fight.
30-Day Pension Enrollment Deadline for New Full-Time Employees
Within 30 days of their start date, new full-time CUNY employees must choose between two radically different pension plans: a defined-benefit plan provided by the New York City Teachers’ Retirement System or a defined-contribution plan known as the Optional Retirement Program managed by TIAA-CREF (may also include investments in the alternate funding vehicles, The Guardian and MetLife). Full-time CUNY employees can read more here. Information on pensions for part-time CUNY employees is posted here.
March with the PSC in NYC’s Labor Day Parade—Sat., Sept. 12
Celebrate Labor Day again next weekend with PSC members, their families and friends at NYC’s Labor Day Parade on Saturday, September 12. The PSC contingent will assemble on 45th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues at 11 AM. We are scheduled to march at 11:30 AM.
This year’s theme is “We Are NYC”. In their call for PSC members to join the march, PSC Solidarity Chairs Mike Fabricant and Jim Perlstein said we will march to celebrate workers’ role in building and sustaining this city and also to send a message about PSC members’ contributions to NYC and the importance of our achieving a fair contract. Read the call to march here, and join us on September 12. Wear your “5 Years Without a Contact” t-shirts.
