May 15, 2013

You May Now Vote in the Pathways Referendum!

Voting by phone, website and by mail is fully functional. All problems are resolved, and the votes have been coming in. American Arbitration Association will be contacting full-time faculty directly to apologize for the series of errors on their part that led to the system failures over the weekend. President Barbara Bowen emailed full-time faculty on Monday, May 13 to add her apologies on their behalf. Click this link to read her message and this link to see a sample ballot and voting instructions.

Chapter Election Results

Thirteen PSC chapters held votes in April to elect chapter officers, delegates and alternates to the union’s Delegate Assembly. Seven campuses also voted to elect representatives to the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund Advisory Council. The Elections Committee certified all the elections except for the vote at the College of Staten Island. The College of Staten Island chapter election results have been challenged, and the Elections Committee is reviewing the challenge. The PSC Delegate Assembly must formally accept the Elections Committee’s certifications before the results are official. The results of the elections that have been certified and will be presented to the Delegate Assembly are posted here on the PSC website.

Research Foundation Central Office Workers Contract Rally—Tues., May 21

Workers from the CUNY Research Foundation Central Office (RFCO) will rally outside the RF Board of Directors meeting next Tues., May 21 from 12-2 PM. Since the RFCO workers’ contract expired in December 2012, management has called for painful concessions including a big hike in health insurance premiums and a lower tier of pay and benefits for new colleagues. The RFCO unit, represented by PSC, is rallying to say no to painful and divisive concessions and to demand a fair contract with fair salary increases and equal pay and benefits for equal work. Come show your solidarity. The rally will take place outside the RF Central Office (230 West 41st Street). Contact Arsenia Reilly for more information.

Tell Albany: Pass the New York State Dream Act

With five weeks remaining in the 2013 legislative calendar, Albany still has plenty of time to pass meaningful legislation. Please send this e-letter to your legislators urging them to pass the New York State Dream Act. The bill would make undocumented immigrant students who graduate from high school or earn a GED in New York State eligible to receive State financial aid including TAP. It would also create a privately funded NYS Dream Fund to provide scholarships to college-bound children who are the children of immigrants, and revise the State’s 529 savings program. An estimated 4,500 undocumented students now attend CUNY, and many more would be able to if need-based financial aid, such as the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), were available to them. See the PSC’s support memo. Read the bill and list of sponsors. Send PSC’s letter in support of the bill to your elected representatives in Albany.
