Pursuant to the contract and the 2010-17 MOA, notice must be provided on or before May 15 for both one-year and three year adjunct appointments. The contract requires that every appointment letter include the adjunct’s title and hourly rate of pay.
Adjuncts are entitled to a one-year appointment if they have served in the same department of the college for not fewer than six (6) consecutive semesters (exclusive of summer sessions) during the three (3) year period immediately preceding the appointment.
Adjuncts are eligible to be considered for a three-year appointment if they have taught at least six (6) classroom contact hours per semester within the same department at the same college for the ten (10) most recent consecutive Fall and Spring semesters preceding September 1, 2017. Departmental committees have been reviewing the first group of eligible adjuncts this spring.
Contact a PSC adjunct grievance counselor at 212-354-1252 no later than Monday, June 5, 2017 if you are eligible for a one- or three-year appointment and if any of the following occur:
- You do not receive any letter of appointment or reappointment on or before May 15;
- The appointment letter you receive does not contain the appropriate title and hourly rate;
- You believe that you are eligible for a one-year appointment and received a letter for a semester appointment;
- You believe that you are eligible for a three-year appointment and received a one-year or a semester appointment; or
- You receive a letter of non-reappointment.
There is a 30-business-day deadline from May 15 for grieving discrepancies in the letter of appointment or a notice of non-reappointment. Contact an adjunct grievance counselor by Monday, June 5. Do not delay, or you may be time-barred from challenging any discrepancies in the letter of appointment or notice of non-reappointment.

PSC’s film series will explore the theme “The Politics of Genre” with a screening of The Postman Always Rings Twice (Garnett, 1946) on Fri., May 12 in the PSC Union Hall (61 Broadway, 16th floor). Rally for Adult Literacy RESCHEDULED for Wed., May 10
Immigration and literacy activists working with the New York City Coalition for Adult Literacy (NYCCAL), have rescheduled the Rally for Adult Literacy promoted last week in this newsletter for Wednesday, May 10:30 AM. More than 2 million New Yorkers currently lack English proficiency and/or a high school diploma—one third of the entire adult population of the city—yet the Mayor’s budget proposal for next year does not renew the $12 million included for adult literacy in this year’s budget. Without the funding, over 5,700 students will lose access to their classes after June 30. Come stand with the PSC and our coalition partners in NYCCAL as we call on the City to continue the $12 million investment as the first step in building a universal system of adult literacy where all immigrants, refugees and other adult learners can access educational opportunities to strengthen themselves and their families.
Petition: HBCU Graduates Deserve Better than DeVos
Bethune-Cookman, a historically black university in Florida, has invited U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to deliver this year’s commencement speech and receive an honorary degree. Alumni of the university are circulating a petition urging that the invitation be rescinded because DeVos’ ideology and advocacy are especially harmful to Black students— the very students HBCUs were created to serve.
