The Professional Staff Congress/CUNY stands in solidarity with our fellow unionists in UAW 2865 as they insist that the University of California enforce the hard-fought contract gains ratified by union members this past year: UC must live up to its contractual obligations. Disturbingly, UAW 2865 has reported that the University of California has engaged in a retaliatory and repressive campaign against union members and union protest, including most egregiously the arrest of three union members at UC San Diego last month for chalk messages inscribed on University property. No charges should be filed against these student workers, and UC should respect the right to peaceful protest, free speech and assembly. Our members have taken inspiration from the successful efforts of UAW 2865 members to win better salaries, schedules and security for themselves and their colleagues at UC. UC administration should meet its legal requirements, meet the terms of the contract, and cease all intimidation of its workforce.
The Professional Staff Congress is a higher education union representing 30,000 faculty (including graduate workers) and professional staff at the City University of New York.
