Deadline to declare eligibility for 3 year teaching appointment is Friday, February 7

In the 2009-2017 PSC-CUNY Contract, the union won a new pilot program for eligible long-serving adjunct faculty to receive three-year appointments. These three-year appointments entail a commitment by the university to provide six contact-teaching hours per semester. Under the last contract, adjuncts were eligible for these longer, more secure appointments only if they taught 10 semesters (Spring and Fall) consecutively in the same department of the same college with at least six contact teaching hours each semester.

In the 2017-2023 contract, which was just ratified by the membership, we were able to win further improvements in this provision but they require you to take action in the next two weeks. Starting this semester, an employee who has served as a teaching adjunct and who has taught at least six contact-teaching hours per semester within the same department for at least 10 of the 12 most recent consecutive semesters can be considered for a three-year appointment provided that 1) they were initially assigned to teach at least six contact hours in the semester but lost a course owing to insufficient enrollment or reassignment of the course to another faculty member AND/OR 2) they lost one or more courses owing to medical reasons in the semester(s) at issue.

If you be believe it is possible that you may fall into this category, you must self-identify to your college Human Resources Office and the department chair no later than the end of the second week of the semester.

To repeat, if you taught six or more contact hours in the same department for 10 of the last 12 semesters (Spring and Fall), and if the interruption in service was due to 1) losing a class you had been offered and/or 2) medical reasons, you must take action before the end of the second week of the spring semester. You can self-identify by emailing your chair and the Human Resources Office at your college.
