Press Conference Opposing Course Cancellations

The PSC is holding an emergency online press conference tomorrow, Tuesday, at 11:00 a.m. to amplify our demand that CUNY use some of the $455 million it has recently been allocated in federal funding to protect classes and students this spring. Please join us at the press conference and show your support for the demand that classes not be cancelled and federal money not be withheld. The online event will last about an hour. Please join us at the press conference and show your support for the demand that classes not be cancelled and federal money not be withheld. The online event will last about an hour. Your presence will add to the power of our message.

Speakers will include the Chair of the NY City Council Committee on Higher Education, several department chairs and union activists, and CUNY students. Members of the press and PSC members will be invited to pose questions of the panelists.

On Friday afternoon, as the PSC learned about pressure on several campuses to raise the minimum number of students required for classes to run, the union issued a public statement demanding immediate action. Raising minimum enrollments and reducing the number of available classes is the exact opposite of what CUNY should be doing to support our students during a pandemic. The union called on the CUNY administration to temporarily lift the restrictions on re-enrollment of students who owe money from last semester and to invest a portion of the $455 million allocated by the federal government to CUNY this month to protect classes, departmental offerings and faculty jobs.

Please register now, sign on at 11:00 tomorrow, Tuesday, and join the press conference. With the start of the semester days away, we have no time to lose to defend academic integrity and protect classes, faculty jobs and our students’ education.
