NY’s Anti-Strike Taylor Law Forum

Online Meeting held on ZoomRecently, we have seen an increase in strikes among academic workers. This online forum will focus on building power in the context of NY’s anti-strike Taylor Law, including discussion of the law and its penalties, challenges to the law, and what it takes to be powerful in a state that outlaws public-sector strikes.
Speakers
Bill Herbert is Distinguished Lecturer and Executive Director of the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions, Hunter College, CUNY
Joshua Freeman is Distinguished Professor of History at Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center.
Jabari Brisport represents New York’s 25th State Senate district. First elected in 2020, he is a UFT member and the first openly gay person of color to serve in the NY State Senate, where he is sponsoring legislation to restore public workers’ right to strike
Barbara Bowen, Professor of English at Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center, served as President of the Professional Staff Congress/CUNY, from 2000-2021, including during the strike authorization vote taken by the PSC in 2016.
