Activisim in their own words: students write about their first rally

CUNY students, faculty and staff rally outside the New York State Capitol, March 15, 2011
Activism in their own words 1.jpg

This past spring the PSC sponsored several rallies to protest state and city budget cuts that would adversely affect the well being of CUNY faculty, staff and students. Because of conflicts with my teaching schedule, I was unable to attend. However, I did manage to recruit students from two of my classes (advanced literature and developmental writing) to participate in my place, to represent our class, and, on their return, to share their experiences of political activism with their peers. I sent them off with my blessings and offered extra credit to those who chose to write a response paper about their experience. Following are the voices of these students in their own words: Fatima Futa, who participated in the March 15 Day of Action in Albany; and Alejandra Restrepo, Jayvon Shabazz, and Hasret Yuksel, who joined the March 5 rally and march from City Hall to Borough of Manhattan Community College
