On April 1, a new, inferior set of pension benefits for New York public workers, including CUNY employees (“Tier 6”), went into effect. If you are a CUNY adjunct (teaching or non-teaching) who submitted an application form to join the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) before April 1, you have until April 30, 2012, to submit the other required documents. The PSC recommends that you do so in person, at the TRS walk-in center in lower Manhattan, and get a receipt (see below for details).
If you have not already submitted these three documents (beneficiary form, proof of date of birth, and letter of appointment) you must not miss the April 30 deadline for doing so. If TRS does not have all three documents by April 30, your enrollment will not take effect.
Here are details for each document:
- A completed beneficiary form, which must be notarized. This form is titled “Designation of QPP Beneficiary Form,” also known by the code “EN6.” It is available here: https://www.trsnyc.org/WebContent/tools/pdf/EN6.pdf This form should also be available at your college’s human resources office, where there should be someone who can notarize it. Most banks also have notaries on staff.
- Proof of date of birth. A copy of your birth certificate or passport.
- A copy of the adjunct’s letter of appointment for Spring 2012. If you don’t have a copy of your CUNY Letter of Appointment (Letter IP44b) for Spring 2012, you may get one from your college HR office. It can be printed on the college’s letterhead.
If you have not already submitted these three documents, the union strongly encourages you to do so in person to the TRS Walk-In Center, on the 2nd floor of 55 Water St. in lower Manhattan, by April 30. After you have handed in the documents, you will receive a dated receipt – keep the receipt as proof of your completed enrollment. (Bring photo ID to show to security when you enter the building. Arriving before noon may help avoid a long line.)
Be sure to submit all three documents no later than April 30!
