Get Informed Before You Vote
The latest issue of Clarion has a two pieces that every PSC member should read before going to the polls: “Obama vs. Romney on Higher Ed: Pell, Perkins and Private Profit,” an analysis by Clarion Editor Peter Hogness, and “PSC’s Political Strategy,” a viewpoint by PSC First Vice President Steve London. Join the union’s political conversation by commenting on Steve London’s strategy item. Members can also access the union’s endorsements on a restricted section of the union website.
Two Weeks Until Election Day: Help Us Get Out the Vote
This year’s state and federal elections will shape financial aid policy and public investment in higher education for years to come. Social Security, Medicare, tax rates and regulations that protect public health and safety, the environment, and the nation’s financial stability are on the line too. Much is at stake. It’s crucial that we mobilize support for state candidates that know the value of CUNY and do our part to reelect President Obama and maintain the Democratic majority in the US Senate who will help carry out his platform. Volunteer opportunities include:
- Phone banking Wed., Oct 24, Tue., Oct 30, Wed., Oct 31, Thurs., Nov 1 and Sun., Nov 4. This week we’ll be calling union members in Connecticut on behalf of Chris Murphy for Senate.
- Bus trip to Connecticut, Saturday Oct 27, for the Democratic Senate candidate Chris Murphy. Buses will leave from 61 Broadway at 7:00am and return in the late afternoon.
- Labor walk to reelect Democratic Senator Joseph Addabbo, Jr., Sat, Nov 3.
- AFT-sponsored twelve-day assignments campaigning for President Obama in Ohio. Shorter, seven-day assignments may become available. If you’re interested, contact Amanda Magalhaes.
Union members can sign up to volunteer and view a schedule of GOTV activities via this restricted page of the PSC website.
Annual Budget Presentation
PSC Treasurer Mike Fabricant will present the union’s annual budget report before the October Delegate Assembly this Thurs., Oct 25 at 5:00pm. All members are welcome to attend and ask questions. Since the PSC Union Hall is closed for renovations, the budget report will take place in the Justice Room at the PSC office (61 Broadway, 15th floor), and the Delegate Assembly will meet across the street in Room BC of the UFT Building (52 Broadway, 19th floor).
Research Foundation Central Office Contract Update
The PSC has commenced bargaining with the CUNY Research Foundation (RF) for a successor agreement to cover the members at the Research Foundation Central Office (RF-CO). PSC represents the professional staff at the RF-CO who coordinate the administration of grants secured by CUNY faculty and the disbursement of grant funds, including maintaining payroll for thousands of grant-funded employees. Management has proposed a new, lower tier of wages and benefits for new employees. PSC members at the RF-CO are adamantly opposed to a second tier and are mobilizing a contract campaign to fight it. We will soon call on you to support their efforts.
