The Fairness in Apartment Rentals (“FARE”) Act, sponsored by City Council Member Chi Ossé, passed the NYC Council today by a veto-proof count of 42 in favor to 8 opposed. PSC President James Davis released the following statement:
“Today, the New York City Council voted to pass the Fairness in Apartment Rentals (“FARE”) Act. This legislation, sponsored by City Council Member Chi Ossé, was endorsed by the PSC-CUNY, and will require the party who hires an apartment rental broker to also pay the broker fee. Its passage will remove the burden of forced broker fees from our members, students, and the entire New York City community. Rent and associated living costs continue to rise across New York City; when landlords hire brokers but shunt the cost onto tenants, move-in costs can mushroom over $10,000, a prohibitively expensive sum for PSC members and the communities we serve. We were proud to join over a dozen other New York City unions, representing hundreds of thousands of working New Yorkers, in endorsing this common-sense legislation, and are grateful to the City Council members who voted for the bill’s passage. We are glad that we were able to help advocate for this legislation to help make New York City a more affordable place to live.”
