On October 21st, five New York City and State elected officials who are also CUNY adjuncts sent a letter to Chancellor Matos Rodríguez and Trustees Chair Thompson expressing their solidarity with the PSC’s campaign for a fair contract.
“CUNY cannot fulfill its mission to be a university for the people without a collective bargaining agreement that is supportive of good working, teaching and learning conditions,” wrote the group, which was organized by State Senator Andrew Gounardes and included State Senator John Liu, Assemblymembers Steven Raga and Jessica González-Rojas, and Former City Councillor James Vacca. All five public officials are current or former adjunct faculty at CUNY.
“Without a fair offer on wages from management, the University will find it increasingly difficult to retain and recruit quality faculty and staff,” the letter warned. “We stand with the PSC and urge the CUNY administration to agree to a contract that rewards and respects workers for their important work.” They also noted management’s ongoing efforts to take back job security provisions for adjuncts like themselves.
