With the country hurting from a deep recession, now is not the time to weaken safety net programs that protect the economically vulnerable – protections such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, employee health benefits, public-sector pensions, unemployment benefits and others. But Congress’s “Super Committee” is set to begin its recommendations for slashing spending and reducing the budget deficit with a report on Nov. 23.
