CHAPTER MEETING
MONDAY, September 8, 2025, 1-3 pm
Part I. The State of the Unions: in the US, the PSC, the Chapter
Joseph van der Naald, Coauthor (with Ruth Milkman) of The State of the Unions 2024: A Profile of Organized Labor in New York City, New York State and the United States. Growth in union election petitions since 2020 has reversed a decade of decline, reaching a level not seen since 2015. Unions are both petitioning for more representation elections and winning more of those elections, with over three-quarters of all private-sector organizing attempts ending in union victories in 2023-24. Additionally, polls show increasing support for unions among Americans, particularly the young.
James Davis, PSC President—will discuss the federal attacks on higher education and ways of supporting CUNY faculty, staff and students. The union has formed six fight-back groups: Immigrant Solidarity, Academic Freedom, Sexuality and Gender, a revitalized Social Safety Net, Defending Research Funding and Environmental Justice. James will also address the upcoming mayoral election.
Anne Friedman, Chapter Chair PSC Retirees—will welcome new members to the chapter, review the work of 2024-25 and look ahead for the future.
Part II. Healthcare
Debbie Bell, PSC Consultant and former Executive Director
Michael Foley, PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund
