Retirees Chapter Film Screening & Discussion: Incident at Oglala

Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87950400980

Speaker/discussion facilitator: Ruben Rangel, CUNY adjunct lecturer and grievance counselor who has met, interviewed and written about Leonard Peltier, will introduce the documentary and lead the discussion.

The pardon of Leonard Peltier, and his release from prison after almost 50 years in February, are the apt background for this screening. The history of the American Indian Movement (AIM) and the struggle of the longest-held political prisoner, Leonard Peltier, provide a harsh contrast to the projected lofty ideals and to the very legitimacy of the U.S. government. The 1992 documentary, Incident at Oglala traces not only a sordid and corrupt campaign by the FBI to suppress a freedom struggle, but it also calls into question the very foundations of the country currently known as the United States of America. The footage and the narrative are both compelling and exhaustive. The link above will admit you to a zoom where you can watch Ruben Rangel’s introduction, followed by the film, and then Ruben Rangel’s remarks and Q & A. More detailed information is available about the film in the September/October issue of Turning the Page, pp.8-10.
