Constructed with newly found footage of Black Panther leaders, The Black Power Mixtape gives us insight into the struggle against racism in the U.S. The resurgence of the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and ‘60s, led by Martin Luther King Jr., and joined by Black Power movements such as The Black Panther Party, the Nation of Islam, and Malcolm X, provided the impetus for succeeding progressive movements, such as those of women, Latinos, and LGBTQ people. FBI Director J Edgar Hoover spoke for ruling elites when he said, “without question [the Black Panther Party] represents the greatest threat to the internal security of the country.” Consequently, various forces were mobilized to destroy or marginalize Black movements, using a variety of strategies ranging from planting false information to assassination. The Black Power Mixtape offers us an opportunity to review that history and explore its relevance to us today.
