Pathways lowers the number of credits that can be required as part of a CUNY college’s general education plan, and it restricts almost all general education courses to three credits. As a result, say critics, Pathways means reduced foreign language study, basic science classes without lab sessions, and pressure for less class time in introductory writing courses. CUNY’s administration contends that Pathways will help students graduate more quickly by easing transfer between different CUNY schools – but faculty say the data does not support that claim.
