This Week in the PSC (9.6.11): Solidarity at CUNY!

Sep 06, 2011

Solidarity at CUNY! Speak up for Adjunct Health Insurance

Add your voice to demand a permanent structural solution to the crisis in adjunct health insurance before 1,700 colleagues lose their coverage. The campaign is growing, but we need your help too. Take a moment right now and take action—here’s what you can do:

  • Send the union’s letter to CUNY and sign the public petition;
  • Save the date—Monday, September 26—for a rally outside the CUNY Board of Trustees’ meeting at 4:00 PM at Baruch College;
  • Tell us your story if you’re an adjunct who receives health insurance from the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund;
  • Share a statement of solidarity, if you’re a full-timer who thinks CUNY should fully fund health insurance for adjuncts.
  • Contact Brian Graf to join the organizing committee to save adjunct healthcare;

See this background information on CUNY’s failure to provide adequate funding or an alternative source for adjunct health insurance.

March with the PSC in the Labor Day Parade—September 10

New York City’s Labor Day parade kicks off at 10 AM, Saturday, September 10 from the intersection of 5th Avenue and 44th Street. Solidarity Committee Co-Chairs Jim Perlstein and Mike Fabricant invite you to help make it a protest march, not a parade. PSC members will gather on 45th street between 5th and 6th Avenues at 10:15 AM.

Volunteer to Help Get Out the Vote for the Special Election

PSC members will phone bank in support of David Weprin’s congressional campaign (CD9) on Monday, September 12 from 5:00-9:00 PM at the PSC offices (61 Broadway, 15th Floor). Weprin was a strong supporter of CUNY when he was on the New York City Council and he will advance a jobs agenda in Washington. Contact Kate Pfordresher to volunteer. NYSUT (including the PSC and UFT) has also endorsed these candidates, and we urge you to vote for them: Phillip Goldfeder (AD23), Mike Simanowitz (AD27) and Dan Quart (AD73). They have each also been endorsed by the NYS AFL-CIO and New York City Central Labor Council.

Remembering 9/11

The 10th anniversary of 9/11 is particularly poignant for the CUNY community; we lost scores of students, employees and alumni. To commemorate what 9/11 meant for CUNY and the PSC, we have compiled Clarion coverage of that awful day on the union’s website, including remembrances of lost colleagues. A retrospective from NYSUT, our statewide affiliate, is also online. The September edition of Clarion will also include a look back at 9/11.

Register Now for Basic Contract and Grievance Counselor Trainings

On Tuesdays in October and November, the union will be offering two sets of workshops for union officers, grievance counselors and activists. The workshops are for members who are interested in learning more about their basic contractual rights and members who are interested in becoming involved with contract enforcement in their chapters.

To become eligible to be a Chapter Grievance Counselor, members are required to attend both the Basic Contract Orientation and the Grievance Counselor Training. Registration for each training session is limited to 35, so register early. To register for a workshop call 212-354-1252 or email Coordinator of Contract Administration Albert Munoz by October 4.
