Graduate Center Faculty Urge Chancellor to Stand for Excellence, Fight for a Fair Contract
Faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center are reinforcing the union-wide campaign for a fair contract with some impressive local organizing. Click here to read a letter to Chancellor Milliken signed by 111 central line faculty at the Graduate Center. The letter says all of CUNY is at a crossroads because of the lack of state funding and an equitable contract and urges the chancellor to “stand for excellence at CUNY by fighting for adequate state funding for the University and by offering its employees a fair and equitable contract.”
Schneiderman: The Right to Organize Is Fundamental
The Supreme Court Should Honor and Protect That Right
New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is leading a coalition of 21 states urging the U.S. Supreme Court to protect workers’ organizing rights. The Court will soon hear Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, a case brought by anti-labor forces seeking to destroy the power of public-sector unions and silence the collective challenge to inequality. A bad decision could undermine agency fee provisions in thousands of union contracts, weaken unions’ ability to represent workers, and undermine the most effective source of resistance to austerity politics. At a news conference Sunday, Schneiderman stood with other elected officials and union leaders to announce the submission of the State’s amicus brief. Petition: Investigate Success Academy Charters
Imagine a school where the principal keeps a “Got to Go” list of the kids they plan to push out. That’s what happened at Eva Moskowitz’s Success Academy Charter Schools in New York City. Fatima Geidi—a mother who had to remove her child with special needs from a Success Academy school after repeated suspensions for minor infractions—has started a petition with Color of Change, a partner organization working with PSC’s national affiliate, the American Federation of Teachers. The petition calls on the Department of Education to conduct a civil rights investigation into Success Academy Charter Schools and to halt federal funding during the investigation.
