This Week in the PSC (10.12.21): CUNY's Good Budget Request | Possible Anti-Bullying Contract Demands

Oct 24, 2021

CUNY’s University Budget Request

Several planks of the New Deal for CUNY platform – developed by the PSC and our coalition partners in the CUNY Rising Alliance – are reflected in CUNY’s University Budget Request for Fiscal Year 2023 (page 18). A new governor and mayor present a major opportunity for our underfunded university system. (NY Daily News, “Getting CUNY on solid footing”) The CUNY administration appears to be seizing the moment, and we are encouraged that our years of organizing with the CUNY Rising Alliance and lawmakers have borne fruit in the CUNY budget request.

The budget request, scheduled for a vote at the October 25 Board of Trustees meeting, calls for 16 percent more for FY 2023 in state support than last year, an additional $313 million, and 20 percent more in city support, an additional $103 million. Read the full message from the PSC principal officers about the University Budget Request. Then save the date—Monday, October 25 at 4:30 PM—for a simultaneously in-person and remote action planned to coincide with the next CUNY Board of Trustees meeting. Let’s urge the Board to pass CUNY’s budget request and to make the New Deal for CUNY a reality.

Tell the Trustees Why CUNY Needs a Substantial Increase in Public Funding

Record your Video Testimony Here by 9:00 AM Thursday, October 14

The CUNY Trustees will vote on the proposed University Budget Request of the State and City during their Monday, October 25 meeting. PSC members are submitting testimony calling on the Board to endorse the surprisingly ambitious budget request. We are urging the Board to join the campaign for a New Deal for CUNY and calling on them to campaign for the funding CUNY needs to hire more full-time faculty and more mental health counselors and academic advisors, to fully fund our raises and CUNY’s other mandatory costs, and to increase the pay of adjunct faculty. Click here to see your colleague’s testimony and record your own.

The Board is not holding an in-person or real-time virtual hearing this month. But they are accepting written and video testimony (3 minutes or less). The deadline to submit the testimony to CUNY via their Dropbox is 6:00 PM Thursday, October 14. The PSC will submit your testimony on your behalf and share it online with PSC members if you submit it to us by our internal deadline of Thursday, October 14 at 9AM. Written testimony can be emailed to Moses Merisier ([email protected]). Video testimony may be recorded and submitted to the FlipGrid posted here. On the Flipgrid page, skip over the “Join with Microsoft” and “Join with Google” buttons and use the guest password: “MyBoTMessage” to record your testimony.
