This Week in the PSC (02.22.17): Testify on the Need to Reduce Teaching Loads at CUNY

Apr 13, 2017

This Friday, March 3, is the City Council hearing on CUNY’s proposed funding from the City. If achieving a reduced teaching load matters to you, you can be there to testify about why it is essential that funding for the reduction be included in the New York City budget. Send a message here to let us know you will testify. No special expertise is needed. Just speak from your experience about the difference a more reasonable teaching load would make for your students and for academic quality at CUNY. Testimony is limited to three minutes. The hearing will take place in the Committee Room, City Hall. CUNY management will testify at 11:00 AM. Union testimony is expected to begin at about 12:30 PM.

Junior Faculty Professional Development Day—Save the Date, Fri., Mar 31

The challenges newly hired faculty face can be daunting, but they don’t have to face them alone. There is still space available at the PSC’s Junior Faculty Development Day Friday, March 31 from 12-5 PM in the PSC Union Hall (61 Broadway, 16th floor). It’s an afternoon of workshops and presentations from department chairs, tenured faculty and union officers organized to help faculty navigate the tenure process and utilize the resources available at CUNY to support your scholarship. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. To RSVP or to ask questions, contact Deirdre Brill, PSC Organizing Director, via email: [email protected] or phone: 212-354-1252. Experienced faculty are asked to please forward this message to your newly hired colleagues.

Lottery for Access to Middle-Income Housing Units in Manhattan

A small number of one and two-bedroom apartments are expected to become available at below-market rents at Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village (east side of Manhattan, below 23rd). PSC members are invited to register for a lottery to create lists of interested potential tenants by clicking here and submitting the requested information between Feb. 6 and Fri., Mar. 10. The rent-stabilized rents for apartments that become vacant this year will be about $2800/month for a one-bedroom unit and $3400/month for a two-bedroom unit. There are minimum and maximum household income requirements for eligibility. Learn more.

Sign up to Defend the Social Safety Net

Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and other safety net programs are in the crosshairs of the 115th Congress. Given the louder and louder drumbeat of cutbacks and privatization, the PSC’s Social Safety Net Working Group is urging members to call their representatives in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. They are also scheduling face-to-face and call-in meetings for members with congresspersons in the NYC metropolitan area. Click here to sign up, to learn more about the campaign and to download talking points and background materials.
