Update on demand to work remotely

Mar 15, 2020

Dear Members and Colleagues:

As of this morning, the union leadership is in discussion with the CUNY Chancellor in response to our demand that all work by PSC-represented employees be conducted remotely, starting tomorrow.  The discussion has been productive so far, but we do not have resolution yet.

So we need to let Chancellor Matos Rodríguez and Chair of the Board William Thompson know how urgent it is that CUNY do the right thing immediately: allow us to work from home. Send the message before 6:00 today.

University management must wake up and recognize that in a public health emergency public health must supersede everything else.  It has to become the priority. Epidemiologists and the evidence from other countries facing the pandemic make it clear that the single most important thing we can do right now is stay home.

Send this message and, if you are on Twitter, retweet this message to the Chancellor and the Board Chair.

Please watch your email and text messages for an update later today.  The PSC will send a message by 9:00 tonight letting you know what we will call on PSC-represented employees to do regarding reporting for work tomorrow, Monday, March 16.  As workers represented by a union, we have power when we take action together, and the PSC is prepared to lead that action.  This is our demand: we want to work; let us work in safety and without endangering the community.

Thank you for the support from across the PSC for the union’s demand.  It may be up to the labor movement to lead, as it has in the past, in the interests of the whole community.

A massive outpouring of messages will make a difference; send your letter and maximize your voice on social media now.

Thank you,

Barbara Bowen

President, PSC
