WeAreWisconsin.jpgMore than ten thousand AFL-CIO trade unionists from New York State participated in a boisterous and enthusiastic Times Square rally on Saturday (4/9) commemorating the death of Martin Luther King (in Memphis where he had gone to support striking sanitation workers) and standing in solidarity with their brothers and sisters in Wisconsin. This capped a week of "We Are One" rallies across the nation rising to the challenge of attacks on organized labor in Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Florida, New York and many other states. March participants vowed not only to defend labor rights and livelihoods, but to extend benefits for all working people. The PSC was part of one of the biggest delegations at the rally, as more than 2,000 NYSUT members marched from the NY Hilton, the site of the 2011 Representative Assembly of the New York State United Teachers (our state affiliate), to Times Square. From the AFL-CIO call for "We Are One" rallies across the USA:

On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn. He had gone there to support sanitation workers demanding their dream: The right to bargain collectively for a voice at work and a better life. They went on to become members of AFSCME.

The hopes and dreams of working families across America are under attack today, more than they’ve been in a long time.

But we’re rising to the challenge—building transformational change for working people from the rubble being left by destructive, CEO-funded politicians in states and in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, April 4, and the days surrounding it, working families across the country are organizing and joining hundreds and hundreds of actions. The labor movement, progressive organizations, the faith community, students, academics and concerned Americans from all walks of life are united, demanding a better future and declaring “We Are One.”
